Hello and welcome back to ‘Pathukulle Number Onnu Sollu’ (Choose a number from 1 to 10).
As usual, we are going to preview a CSK game today. Many of you have commented asking why we are not doing preview shows for Mumbai and RCB games.Since you are seeing CSK preview videos, I am doing previews for all CSK games. If you are gonna watch for other teams, I will be more than happy to do that. I am not FOR or AGAINST any teams.
I am not talking about my team (RR) either. Whether that means I am against my own team or what? Nothing like that. Anyway, CSK were too good in the last game, Praveen. He will stick to what he said in the last show saying this dress is lucky for CSK.But still, we will break his defense by stating the real reason. He is wearing the same dress because they haven’t washed his clothes at his place yet. Today, I saw a famous tweet, Praveen. I am sure you would have seen it too. But let us hear it from the horse’s mouth. Take a look at this tweet.
You read it out and then we will discuss.
Wow, our very own Prasanna has only tweeted it. This is not a tweet. This is a sub-tweet. He wants to indirectly attack someone. I don’t know against whom this tweet was about. We all know against whom this was about. He will say this himself. I have a doubt regarding that. Tell us more about it, This tweet was not targeted at any individual. This tweet was just a genuine concern of Prasanna.
My whole job is spending sleepless nights thinking about what a batsman should do to overcome his technical flaws or to plot a batsman’s weakness and tell it to the bowlers.I have been doing this for the last 20 years. And you can clearly see there are no grey hairs yet. So, obviously, that means I am better.
And if I work a season fully with a batsman and if I see a similar pattern of dismissal for a batsman…Firstly, one should understand what does pattern of dismissal means. Many are replying without even understanding the meaning.
Getting lbw or bowled to an inswinger. Or getting caught-behind to an inswinger. Or getting caught at short mid-wicket for an inswinger. Then you have a problem against a particular delivery, particular line, and particular length. So, either you are having a technical flaw for that incoming delivery. Or your opponent has figured out your pattern of dismissal and plotted your dismissal accordingly.
For example, if your son is studying 4th standard and has failed in 4 subjects, is it fair for you to take him to Switzerland for a vacation and then ask him to do 5th standard directly?I have a reply to this question. My dad is someone who teaches me all the subjects at home. But I won’t usually understand.
He will scold me, pamper me, give me chocolates, give me lunch, and make me sleep. But when the clock strikes 4, I will usually go to the road and play.
My dad will happily send me to go play and then study once I return. And when I return, 6-7:30, I will understand everything that I study.I will go to sleep at 8. So, your concept is totally wrong. You are talking about the pattern of dismissal.
For example, let me ask you something.
A batsman edges an outswinger and the ball goes towards the third man region for a boundary.Whereas, a similar poke gets caught. Now should he go and work in the nets or should he freshen up his mind and come back fresh?
I will give you a typical example. I have a personal experience/ anecdote about Dinesh Karthik, who is in scintillating form this season of IPL.He is a hard worker and an excellent player. In fact, I used to take my cycle and go to the Chepauk and other stadiums just to watch him play.
He was a proper box office material and I was a huge fan from those days. And I was playing in the Asia Cup. I don’t remember the year correctly if it was 2014 or 2015. At that time, he was asking me more questions as he was trying to find out.So, he asked me whether I will visualize. I told him, “Yes, sometimes, I do visualize like I am bowling or how I am getting someone dismissed. I don’t visualize too much. I do proper planning and get it executed in the match.”
He told me, “I visualize a lot. It is very important for a batsman. I asked Virat Kohli and he told me that he visualizes a lot. That how he celebrates after getting a hundred or how he cover-drives the first ball for four.”So, I told him, “Very good, Dinesh. You can also do that, right?” He told me, “Yes, but when I visualize, I only get an edge and get caught behind.”
We had a match against Afghanistan the next day. In his visualization, he got caught edging one while playing a cover drive in Shapoor Zadran’s over. I asked him “Why are you visualizing like you are getting caught behind? Why can’t you visualize a perfect cover drive for a boundary?” We were just having this jolly conversation.
You won’t believe. The power of visualization. He edged one and got caught the same way in Shapoor Zadran’s over.Imagine the power of visualization. Sometimes, the burden of mental agony, the burden of being in the bubble, or the burden of playing and getting out repetitively makes you think negatively.
If you get beaten in one delivery, the very next delivery you might get an edge and get caught. That’s why they ask you to take a break from the game. If you keep going to the nets and keep playing also, you will get trapped plumb in front only.
I am not saying that you are wrong. I am just saying that you are not valuing the mental side of a cricketer enough.⅞I am not saying you are wrong either. You gave an example of a batsman getting an edge and sometimes, it might also go for a four. The same ball will also get you caught sometimes.
The cricketing fraternity will only see the scorecard at the end of the day. If you get 5 edges that go for fours, they will only say you have scored a breezy 12-ball-20. They won’t talk about the struggle.
KS Bharat edged one that went for a boundary. He played a beautiful cover drive the very next delivery. If you ask him whether the edge that went for the boundary gave him confidence or the perfect cover drive gave him confidence, any batter will pick only the ball hitting the middle of the bat.
There is a sequence for that to happen. Your stance, your knee flexion, your balance. If you have a trigger, then the starting point of the trigger. Then when you finish the trigger position, there is a neutral position. Once you come to the neutral position, you will take a crouch and watch the pitch of the ball. Then you decide whether to go on the front foot or back foot or stand still in the crease to play according to the length of the ball.
Only if you keep the semicolon for all this C programming, you can play your shots accordingly to the length of the ball.Outstanding. But sorry to interrupt, Prasanna. Have you had Paal Payasam?Of course, why? Do you like Paal Payasam? I have stopped having that ever since I started going to the gym.Or tell me which sweet do you like? Or we will keep Paal Payasam itself since that’s my favorite sweet. Do you know how to prepare Paal Payasam?
I don’t know how to light the gas itself. How will I know how to cook then? That’s why you are not getting my point, I guess. Because what’s the first step in making Paal Payasam? But the batsman should have the right frame of mind to be willing to do that. That’s why they are asking to give a holiday for that mind.
I am blaming only them who are blaming people who wanna give a holiday to that mind. I am not blaming your entire point at all. Maybe you are valuing the mind lesser in my opinion. You are misunderstanding me, Ash. I haven’t played cricket as you have.
No, no, it’s not about that. Many are saying take a 5–6-month break. What is a break? I wanna completely throw my cricket kit away and take a 7-day break with my wife and kid in Switzerland. When you are back, keep the camera on the pitch and see if your trigger movement is correct.
Virat Kohli’s strength is his cover drive.
And his weakness, while he went through a lean patch, was nicking an outswinger. But the number of boundaries he scores playing the cover drive will supersede the number of times he gets caught nicking an outswinger. But it has been ages since I have even seen him play a cover drive. When it is like that, I won’t accept if you say take a mental break, then you can suddenly wear a pad and start playing your cover drives.
I am not saying that taking a break will not help. The break should be small. The most important ingredient is to make sure what am I lacking as a top batsman?Someone who has scored 70 100s for fun is going through a lean patch. He scored his last 100 in 2019 against Bangladesh.
But before that century in 2016, he played cricket almost 90% of the time from 2016 to 2019. He has scored runs every year and scored 100s for fun.No one asked him to take a break then, right? And just because he hasn’t scored that many in the last three years, you can’t ask him to take a break.
I am a well-qualified person, dude. They can’t cheat me. See, the guy who has scored those 70 hundreds will know whether to go for a holiday or for batting. So, we need not comment on the same. We should give him the space for the same. Let’s get into today’s show on that note. I feel this is a valid discussion. I saw a match that day. I think it was J Suchith. He bowled onto the pads, he played a flick and got caught in the short midwicket.
Just because he got out that way, you cannot coach him by asking him to time the flick correctly.See, cricket is a very, very funny game. A reporter once told me when I was starting to play the game. He is a pushy character.I was taking an exam when he called me.
